Catheters are an essential piece of medical equipment that is usually used to help patients who are experiencing problems with their bladder to urinate. It is imperative that the bladder is emptied on a regular basis; otherwise serious issues can arise, including infections and kidney problems. Some people require catheters for their entire lives, others only need them temporarily.
Regardless of what caused the need for catheterization and how long it will be used for, there are some basic principles that need to be adhered to at all times. One of the most important is cleanliness. There is no room for poor hygiene in any sort of medical setting, but when it comes to personal treatments like catheterization, this holds especially true. Catheters need to be changed regularly, and high quality equipment must be used at all times. This will drastically reduce the chances of further problems stemming from the catheter.
Although catheterization can be a very intimidating prospect, there are some things in life that simply cannot be avoided. The best way to approach it is to keep in mind that there are millions of other people out there going through the same thing. It is not ideal for anyone, but modern medical treatments are becoming more and more comfortable. In fact, these days, many people who are catheterized are able to live relatively normal lives – some even spend the majority of their time at home. Read the rest of this entry »

In order to run any business successfully, there are many factors to consider. Massage therapy is a unique career option because it allows the massage therapist to pursue their own independent business, or they can work with other larger organizations, such as hospitals, sports teams, resorts, and many others. The future is open wide for massage therapists, but there are some considerations that are essential to guarantee success and longevity.
The first, and most obvious, aspect of being a successful massage therapist starts with training. If the cause of the bronchitis is a bacterial infection, antibiotics will be necessary. However, most cases are caused by viruses, and there are no specific medicines available to fight viruses.
Sometimes with viral bronchitis, your doctor will suggest an antibiotic to prevent a secondary bacterial infection. However, this approach is not standard.
One exception to the rule that viruses aren’t treated with specific medicines is influenza. Influenza, or true “flu,” can cause sudden and severe illness, including bronchitis.
There are several antiviral medications available to treat influenza. These medicines are expensive, and many of them are not yet approved for toddlers.
However, if your child is diagnosed with influenza, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication such as Tamiflu to shorten the course of the illness and reduce its severity.
Whether your child has fever blisters or canker sores, the first thing to do is to make him comfortable. For sores inside the mouth, try to avoid foods that are sharp and crunchy, such as potato chips. Small, sharp pieces of food will chronically reinjure the sores.
Also avoid acidic, spicy, and salty foods. This will help reduce pain during eating. And check that your toothpaste does not contain SLS. If it does, use another type.
For sores around the mouth, try to minimize stretching or chapping of the skin. Toddlers with fever blisters will often lick the sores — sometimes multiple times a minute — to relieve the pain.
The moisture of the saliva temporarily soothes the area, but as soon as the air dries it, the skin becomes drier and more irritated. Eventually, the skin will crack, making it prone to secondary infection by bacteria.
Antibiotic drops are almost always used in otitis externa. The drops are inserted directly into the ear, minimizing any systemic (whole-body) absorption of the medication. They typically work quickly and painlessly, although some children continue to have pain for several days after starting the drops.
Dozens of antibiotic drops are available. Some are sold as single antibiotics, some as combinations, and some are mixed with steroids to help reduce (swelling in the canal. Some ear drops are sold over the counter, while others are available by prescription only.
An ear wick may be helpful to mop up the fluid in the canal and increase the delivery of antibiotic drops. Wicks are sold in many pharmacies and drugstores. They are made of foam or gauze and are placed in the ear, remaining there through an entire course of antibiotic drops. The drops travel down the wick, causing it to expand and bring the drops into contact with the infected skin.
